Description:TheNCI-H209celllinewasderivedbyA.F.Gazdarandassociatesin1979fromthebonemarrowofapatientwithsmallcellcancerofthelung.Thebonemarrowspecimenwastakenpriortotherapy.ThelineisaclassicSCLCcelllinewhichexpresseselevatedlevelsoffourbiochemicalmarkers(neuronspecificenolase,brainisoenzymeofcreatinekinase,L-DOPAdecarboxylaseandbombesin-likeimmunoreactivity.C-mycDNAsequencesarenotamplified.NogrossstructuralDNAabnormalitiesweredetected.Thisisacelllinethatgrowsaslargeaggregatesinsuspension.Onlytheaggregatesareviable,butnomeaningfulviabilitypercentagecanbemeasured.Themediumwillnormallycontainlargeamountsofcelldebris.ThecellsexpressanaberrantformofRB1thatisnotphosphorylated,apparentlyduetoasinglepointmutationatcodon706(Cys->Phe).
